Tech companies for example like Samsung and Sony getting caught using cheap capacitors designed to fail after just a few years, forcing you to buy a new TV sooner.Īpple and alike getting caught doing phone updates on older models that deliberately slow the OS down and increase battery life, making you switch to a new phone sooner. The whole sub is a mix of showing old stuff that works, and pointing out how older stuff was made to last vs the new stuff today which is made to only last X amount of time. For power tools those same brands have entry level ones that will be adequate for most people I will say though stay away from entry level battery operated tools that generally used to be always corded (circular saws and the like) usually they have tiny crappy blades and very little power, just get a corded one and a carbide tipped blade, they tend to be the same price if not cheaper and have more power and it'll make the work go quicker to boot. I've used other people's super cheap tool kits enough to know you shouldn't waste your time with them, screw drivers/bits get marred easily, drill bits dull after a few uses, drills barely have enough torque to go through drywall, exaggerating a bit there but good luck driving a screw into a stud with some of the ones I've seen.Īnd I'm not saying you need to go super high end or anything, for most hand tools Lowe's or Home Depot's house brands or Craftsman are good enough not to be a pain to use. I tend to go at least middle of the road especially when it comes to tools unless I'm 100% certain I only need to use it once or twice.

The "buy cheap first" thing back fires when the cheap one is a pain to use or doesn't work nearly as well. Many thanks, definitely looking forward to my quality of life improving for the first time :)Įdit: Got sooo many good responses, just starting the work day so I’ll be sporadically looking through them.

Of course I’m not gonna splurge but rather purchase items over time(and pay off debt and save, of course) but I feel like there certain simple items, like a vacuum or a good electric razor, that I should make sure I’m getting something of high quality. So my question to r/AskMen is: can you give me a list of things that I should make sure I have as an adult/things that I shouldn’t skimp out on? Most of the things I bought were cheap items I got on Amazon (desk, coffee table, microwave, etc.) but now I’m looking at replacing these items with things that are a little more sturdy and of higher quality. I’m truly in shock and I’m still processing the fact that they believed in me and I'm earning so much money lol. So long story short, I’m a 27m and my family never really had money, I moved to another city five years ago and I just got a job that pays close to six figures after graduating college(went back and got my degree ten years later, it’s never too late, folks) and the first place I interviewed for was my dream company and I got hired there.
